Riflescopes -- designed to be mounted to the barrel of a rifle -- come in a variety of models with different features, magnifications and objective sizes. Bushnell and Zeiss are two companies that produce riflescopes, including the Bushnell Elite 4200 and Zeiss Conquest. Bushnell follows a mission statement of developing superior optical products while Zeiss has a slogan of: "We make it visible."
Types
Bushnell Elite 4200 and Zeiss Conquest scopes are offered in several different models, including different magnifications and objective sizes based on the intended use. Magnification is indicated by the first number or set of numbers after the model name while the objective size is commonly expressed in millimeters after the magnification. For example, the Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40mm riflescope has a magnification range from three to nine with a 40 mm objective lens. Both the Elite 4200 and Conquest riflescopes are available from two to 20 magnification with a 40 mm or 50 mm objective lens.
Features
Common features for riflescopes include reticle styles, color and waterproof coatings. Both the Elite 4200 and Conquest are waterproof and fogproof. Reticle styles for the Elite 4200 include the traditional duplex, illuminated reticle or mil dot reticle for ballistic calculations. Zeiss offers the Z-Plex or Rapid-Z reticles on the Conquest that can be used for windage and elevation calculations while hunting. The Elite 4200 and Conquest come in a matte black or silver finish.
Benefits
Along with being waterproof and fogproof, the Elite 4200 and Conquest have additional benefits. The Zeiss Conquest uses an advanced optics system with multi-coated glass for a crisp, clear picture. Bushnell Elite 4200 also contains a fully multi-coated lens system and is dry-nitrogen filled. Both the Elite 4200 and Conquest are made with a one-piece tube that has been recoil tested for different hunting situations.
Measurements
Specific weight, length and eye relief measurements vary between the model for the Elite 4200 and Conquest. The eye relief -- the measurement from the eyepiece of the riflescope to your eye -- on the Bushnell Elite 4200 ranges from 3 to 3 1/2 inches, the weight ranges from 13 to 18 oz. and the length ranges from 10 to 14 inches. The Zeiss conquest has a longer relief from 3 1/2 to 4 inches, but is slightly heavier weighing between 15 and 16 oz. with a measurement of 12 to 13 inches.
Considerations
Two important considerations for the Bushnell Elite 4200 and Zeiss Conquest include the initial price and warranty. Both companies offer limited lifetime warranties, but the Zeiss Conquest is more expensive. As of 2010, the price range for the Elite 4200 is $300 to $600 while the Conquest sells for $500 to more than $1,000.
