Red Vines has used its original licorice recipe as a foundation for almost 100 years and today produces a variety of licorice flavors. A serving size of Red Vines Original Red Twists are nine vines which provides 200 calories. History
Glycyrrhiza, also known as licorice, is a shrub native to Europe and Asia whose root is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Licorice has been used for thousands of years as both food and by eastern and western medicine for a variety of ailments including ulcers, eczema and upper respiratory infections. Some licorice was found in King Tut's tomb and has been found demonstrated in hieroglyphs in addition to reports of Alexander the Great and Emperor Caesar promoting the benefits.
Nutrition Facts
A serving of Red Vine Original Red Twists licorice contains no fat. There is also no cholesterol in Original Red Twists, but it does contain 46 g of total carbohydrates, with sugar accounting for 29 g and no dietary fiber. There are 2 g of dietary protein contained in one serving in addition to 25 mg of sodium.
Recommendations
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, fat should be limited to less than 65 g per day. The FDA recommends consuming less than 300 mg of cholesterol per day, and your total carbohydrate intake should be at least 300 g per day to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. The USDA recommends 25 g of dietary fiber per day for gastrointestinal health and 10 to 35 percent of your daily caloric intake should consist of proteins. The American Heart Association recommends less the 1,500 mg of sodium per day.
Vitamins and Minerals
Red Vines Original Red Twists do not contain any additional vitamins and minerals. The USDA recommends adequate amounts of iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium in your diet per day.
Precautions
Licorice in even moderate quantities can cause some side effects and should be avoided in people with heart failure, fluid retention, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney and liver disease. It should be avoided if pregnant or breast feeding and also if taking certain medications such as digoxin, ACE inhibitors, insulin, laxatives, MAO inhibitors, steroids and oral contraceptives.
