Facts on Hives
1. Hives Happen in Just Minutes
Hives are an allergic reaction that can happen suddenly. A variety of things trigger hives, including infection due to a viral illness and allergies to foods, medication, make up or soap. Other causes of hives include stress, both emotional and physical, insect bites and even blood transfusions. Hives look a lot like mosquito bites. They are raised red bumps with flat tops.
2. Angioedema: Hives Kicked Up a Notch
Angioedema is a case of hives, with large welts, which penetrate deeper into the skin. Symptoms of angioedema include severe swelling, typically in the face. Sometimes there are no welts or wheals, just a swelling of the skin. Occasionally swelling can happen in the throat, which becomes dangerous as it may cut off oxygen to the rest of the body. While one in five people will suffer from hives, sufferers from angioedema are much fewer.
3. Some People are More Prone to Hives Than Others
Hives can happen at any age; however, certain people are more susceptible to them than others are. Those more at risk for hives include persons who have had a previous allergic reaction to something or family members who have hives. Sometimes a break out of hives is never traced back to one particular food or situation.
4. Treat Hives With Home Remedies
Most mild cases of hives and angioedema heal on their own. They may be unattractive and highly uncomfortable, but should pass in a day or two. To relieve discomfort, people with hives can take a cool bath and use cool compresses. They can also wear loose, light fitting clothes, and avoid activities that cause them to sweat. The most common type of medication to take with hives is an over the counter antihistamine, like Benadryl. Just be sure to follow the directions and don't plan to drive, as it will make you drowsy. If symptoms persist for more than two days, see a doctor.
5. Hives can be Deadly
Anaphylactic reactions, a severe allergic reaction that may occur with hives or angioedema, are a life threatening condition. People who suffer from anaphylactic reactions have severe and immediate swelling, cutting off oxygen to the body. Bee stings and peanuts are two of the most causes for anaphylactic allergy reactions. If a person is aware that he is at risk for anaphylactic reaction, they may carry an epinephrine kit, or epi-pen. Epinephrine is a prescription only drug that rapidly reverses severe swelling.
