While the traditional image of a martial arts practitioner may be of a barefoot individual in a white uniform, there are a number of occasions during which a martial arts practitioner may be required (or prefer to wear) special shoes or footwear. Choose equipment specifically designed for martial arts to have the best outcomes.
Significance
Requirements regarding martial arts shoes vary greatly. Even within a single discipline, different teachers may have different expectations and requirements. In disciplines where shoes are not typically worn, exceptions may be made for students with special needs, such as those with diabetes. Shoes are traditionally used by those practicing kung fu, karate and ninjitsu, but may be worn by any martial arts practitioner with instructor approval.
Function
As with any shoe, martial arts shoes protect the foot. This is particularly significant during sparring, when padded shoes also help to protect the sparring partner. Martial arts shoes must be lightweight and flexible, and should allow you to feel the floor. They must also be designed in such a way that they do not damage the surface on which you are practicing, especially if you are practicing on padded mats.
Considerations
When choosing a shoe, consider the activities that will be performed while wearing the shoes, and whether the shoes will be worn indoors, outdoors or both. The shoe should fit your foot snugly but comfortably. When choosing shoes for children and adolescents, choose quality shoes that will properly support the growing and changing bones, muscles and tendons of the feet.
Types
Kung fu shoes are traditional for some disciplines; these shoes have a thin, flexible rubber sole and cotton upper. Kung fu boots that come up to the knee are also used by some practitioners--in particular, those of the hung gar school of kung fu. Sock or slipper-like shoes protect the foot from the bare floor, which may harbor bacteria. Tabi boots are traditional for ninjitsu practice; these boots have a separate "pocket" for the big toe and require special socks. Padded boots may be worn during sparring practice.
Warning
Choose shoes specifically designed for martial arts practice that will allow you to pivot and turn while providing the proper amount of traction. Shoes designed to prevent pivoting and turning can cause injury. Always consider your safety when choosing a shoe, and do not purchase a shoe without checking with your instructor first. Shoes must fit properly and be securely fastened so that they do not come off during practice, leading to potential injury.
