Deep breathing and coughing keeps the lungs clear of fluid and mucous. Effective breathing comes from the diaphragm, a muscle located below the chest, and your abdomen. Breathing only through your chest is inefficient at clearing the lungs. You can perform breathing and coughing exercises in nearly any position, although performing them while seated or standing is most effective. Repeat each exercise five to 10 times.

Upright Breathing

Sit or stand with one hand on the chest and the other below the chest, over the diaphragm. Exhale. Close your lips and breath in through your nose. Concentrate on the sensation of your diaphragm expanding. When done properly, your lower hand should rise as the diaphragm expands.

Pursed Lip Breathing

Inhale through your nose, holding for a count of five. Purse your lips and empty your lungs through your mouth. Your cheeks should not puff out. Rest a few seconds upon exhalation and repeat.

Deep Breathing

Place your hands on either side of your chest. Take a deep breath, concentrate on your hands spreading apart as you inhale. Exhale by relaxing.

Coughing

Take several deep breaths. Concentrate on the feeling of your chest sinking down as you exhale. After several deep breaths, inhale once and cough forcefully as you exhale.

Huff Coughing

Sit upright, but relaxed. In particular, relax the throat. Inhale slowly, holding for a count of three. Exhale forcefully, saying the word "huff" gently at the same time.
