Acne blemishes come in varying forms, but all stem from the same cause. Blemishes occur when the sebaceous glands become overactive, producing too much of the oil normally used to lubricate the skin. This clogs the pores in combination with dead skin and dirt. The resulting whiteheads, blackheads, under-skin pimples and cysts can be treated with household remedies.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a common houseplant, and Aloe barbadensis is associated with natural healing properties. After removing a leaf from the base of the plant, slit the leaf down its spine. Peel the skin and allow the juice to run clear, leaving a thick textured gel. This gel can be massaged directly into the blemished area and be left to absorb. The GrannyMed holistic care website notes that aloe vera can combat acne because of its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is derived from the Australian tree, the Melaleuca alternifolia. According to MayoClinic.com, the source of tea tree oil's medicinal use comes from its terpinen-4-ol compound, which is said to have antimicrobial properties that can reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. A 1995 study led by Dr. Amala Raman of King's College London and cited by the University of Maryland tested 119 people with acne using tea tree oil, in 5 percent strength, against the well-known acne treatment benzoyl peroxide. The study found the topical application of tea tree oil just as effective and with fewer side effects.
Honey
Honey's ability to promote healing and fight infection is largely because of its sugar content, which draws the bacteria out of the skin. Through enzymes and acidic pH, honey also can prevent bacterial growth. Use an organic honey and apply to the skin as a face mask once a day for 15 to 20 minutes as needed.
