How Do Energy Supplements Work?

Thermogenic Stimulants

Thermogenic stimulants are dietary aids that are designed to raise metabolism. They are contained in a number of energy supplements. Thermogenic stimulants cause a boost in energy levels and encourage the endurance required to burn a greater number of calories. The benefits of taking thermogenic energy supplements vary, but in general they may lead to greater energy, focus and weight loss.

Caffeine

Caffeine is the most commonly used stimulant in energy supplements. Caffeine causes a moderate boost in the metabolic rate (the amount of energy expended in a given period), but this jolt of energy is short-lived. Excessive amounts of caffeine can cause anxiety, irritability and difficulty sleeping. It can also cause blood pressure to rise and irregular heart rhythms.

Synephrine

Synephrine is the primary "active" compound found in the fruit of a plant called citrus aurantium. It is a stimulant similar to caffeine. Synephrine is found in several energy supplements. In traditional Chinese medicine, synephrine is used to help motivate the Qi (energy force). It also works to increase metabolic rate, improve energy levels and encourage the disbursement of additional calories.

Sugar

Some energy bars, drinks and gels contain simple sugars that provide a rapid but brief boost in energy. The effects generally last a few hours at best. If consumed frequently, these products may lead to weight gain.
