Too much abdominal body fat poses serious health consequences, including increasing the risk for heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Besides following a reduced calorie diet and boosting exercise, taking certain supplements can help banish belly fat by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation, or fat burning. Please consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract contains catechin polyphenols and caffeine, both of which might induce fat loss when combined with exercise. Kevin Maki led a team of researchers from Tufts University in Boston who examined the impact of combining green tea catechins and exercise on weight loss. During the 12-week study, overweight and obese subjects received a green catechin beverage or a placebo beverage while performing at least three moderate intensity exercise sessions a week. Researchers discovered that the green tea catechin group lost more belly fat compared to those who were administered a placebo, according to November 2008 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition." Xanthigen

Researchers from the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in Russia examined the effects of Xanthigen, which contains brown marine algae fucoxanthin and pomegranate seed oil, on body fat in obese women. Participants were randomly assigned to receive Xanthigen or a placebo for 16 weeks. At the end of the study, scientists found that the Xanthigen group experienced a significant reduction in waist circumference compared to the placebo group, according to research reported in the January 2010 issue of the journal "Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism." L-Carnitine

Made from the amino acids methionine and glycine, L-carnitine is a compound that may promote weight loss. University of Rostock researchers in Germany studied the effects of L-carnitine on fat oxidation and body composition in overweight subjects. They found that subjects taking L-carnitine for 10 days significantly increased fat burning compared to those without L-carnitine, according to research published in the August 2004 issue of the journal "Metabolism."
