Vitamin B-12, also known as cobalamin, is normally found in animal products such as milk, eggs, meat and poultry. Vitamin B-12 is important for the production of healthy red blood cells and for the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Vitamin B-12 deficiency causes pernicious anemia and neurological problems. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is treated using B-12 supplements. Some patients may experience a rash after taking B-12 supplements. While you should consult your doctor before taking any supplements, do so especially if you experience skin irritation while taking vitamin B-12.

Red and Itchy Bumps

Patients allergic to cobalamin, cobalt and other ingredients in vitamin B-12 may develop areas of red itchy bumps or patches mainly on the chest and back, according to MayoClinic.com. Patients who experience red, itchy bumps that are accompanied by breathing problems while taking vitamin B-12 should stop taking the supplements and seek medical attention

Hives

Taking vitamin B-12 supplements may also cause rashes known as hives also known as urticaria, which are mainly due to an allergic reaction, according to MayoClinic. Hives are types of raised itchy red welts with clearly defined edges on the surface of the skin. Hives usually start suddenly and go away quickly once the allergic reaction diminishes. Patients who experience hives while taking vitamin B-12 supplements should discontinue the drugs and consult the doctor.

Rosacea

Patients taking vitamin B-12 supplements may also develop rosacea, a type of acne-like rash, according to Drugs.com. Rosacea involves swelling and inflammation of the blood vessels under the cheeks, nose and forehead. Patients experience prominent spider-like blood vessels, swelling and skin eruptions similar to acne. The face may also appear red and have a tendency to flush or blush easily.
