Diets that are designed for a specific blood type are based on the theory that each blood type has specific requirements, according to their chemical makeup. These weight loss diets suggest that eating foods that are appropriate for your blood type will help you lose weight and avoid diseases common to your blood type. The diet for type O blood centers around high protein and low-carbohydrate foods. There is little scientific evidence to support these conclusions, but there are success stories available that suggest these diets may work.

Step 1

Make an appointment with your family physician to see if you are healthy enough to begin a diet and weight loss program. Find out if you have any health problems that you need to take into consideration before starting. During the examination, make sure you are blood type O.

Step 2

Find out what types of foods are recommended for the Type O diet. Lists of these foods can be found on the Internet or in the book, "Eat Right 4 For Your Blood Type," by Dr. Peter D' Adamo. High-protein foods are key to the type O diet, so make sure to add protein rich foods, such as adzuki beans and black-eyed peas. Beef, veal and venison are also good sources of proteins that can be frozen and stored for several months.

Step 3

Clean out your pantry, kitchen cabinets and refrigerator to eliminate any foods not on the lists. These diets focus on making lifestyle changes. Making a half-hearted effort will only defeat the purpose of trying the diet. Avoid dairy products, lentils, kidney beans, corn and gluten products, according to the book, "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type."

Step 4

Restock the kitchen cabinets, refrigerator and pantry with recommended foods. Make a checklist to take with you to the grocery store so that you continue to stock the pantry with foods that work well with the diet. Ginger, horseradish and red pepper are excellent seasonings that fill well with type O diets, according to "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type."

Because type O is a universal blood type, many foods are neutral and can be consumed in moderation. Many vegetables, fruits and meats are acceptable for type O diets. Oats, rice and amaranth are neutral grains that are good in moderation for type O people. Beets, carrots, peas and sweet potatoes are also listed as neutral, according to "Eat Right 4 Your Type." Fruits on the list include apples, cranberries, and papaya.

Step 5

Cook from scratch if you can. This eliminates unwanted waste and will not load your food with unwanted additives and preservatives. It will allow you to take more control over your diet and the foods you eat. You can freeze leftovers in single serving containers for days when you need a quick meal. Cooking from scratch will allow you to pick and choose from foods that you like on the lists and incorporate them into your favorite dishes. Many foods in the type O diet do well in the freezer and can be frozen fresh or after they have been prepared.
