The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that Americans consume no more than 2,300mg of sodium daily. Due to an influx of processed foods, many people consume more than that. High-sodium diets lead to heart disease and high blood pressure according to the American Heart Association. Salt also causes the body to retain water, which can cause bloating. Flush sodium from your body with water. Contrary to popular belief, water does not cause bloating, but sodium does. Drinking more water reverses the effect.
Step 1
Consume 1 oz. of water for every pound of your body weight to flush sodium from your system.
Step 2
Weigh yourself and record your body weight. Body weight can fluctuate daily, especially for women. Weigh yourself in the morning without clothes.
Step 3
Determine how many ounces your water bottle holds. If it doesn't say on the packaging, weigh the empty water bottle. Then, fill it with water and weigh it again. Deduct the weight of the empty water bottle from the weight of the filled water bottle to determine how much water it holds.
Step 4
Divide your body weight by the number of ounces your water bottle holds. This determines how often you'll have to fill the water bottle to reach your goal. For example a 148 lb. person using an 8 oz. water bottle should fill up 18.5 times per day.
Step 5
Keep a record each time you refill your water bottle. A simple tally sheet works well.
