Eight out of 10 women have cellulite. Although cellulite is harmless, it can be rather unsightly. Cellulite is made up of dimpled sections of fat that typically appear on the buttocks, thighs and legs. There are a number of creams, supplements and treatments promising to make your cellulite disappear, but the most effective results are achieved through lifestyle changes.
Because fat is distributed in the thighs, hips and buttocks in women, they are much more likely to have cellulite. Cellulite is also more common as you age because skin loses its elasticity. Possible risk factors for cellulite include having a sedentary lifestyle, taking hormonal contraceptives, having a slow metabolism, dehydration, genetics, poor eating habits and stress. Dermatologists do not regard cellulite as a disorder or serious problem, but rather it is considered a normal condition.
Massage
Many believe that vigorously massaging cellulite-ridden areas can help increase blood flow, which will smooth the skin around the affected area. Massaging is thought to help remove toxins and reduce the presence of excess fluids, thereby making the cellulite less noticeable. According to the National Institutes of Health, there is little scientific evidence to suggest that massaging works to reduce the visibility of cellulite permanently.
Creams and Supplements
There are a number of creams, vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts on the market which claim to treat cellulite. Wraps are also popular for the treatment of cellulite; however there is little scientific evidence showing that any topical treatments or supplements are effective.
Weight Loss
Cellulite is often likened to cottage cheese because of its bumpy, dimpled texture. According to MayoClinic.org, losing weight is the best way to improve rid your skin of cellulite. Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day will help tone and strengthen your muscles and help burn fat. According to the National Institutes of Health, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and fiber can help to prevent cellulite as well. Also avoid smoking to help maintain your skin's elasticity.
Alternatives
According to MayoClinic.com, there are a number of medical remedies that may help problem areas, including treatment with lasers and radiofrequency systems. The National Institutes of Health warns that liposuction is not a good remedy for the removal of cellulite and may actually make it look worse. If you are concerned about the appearance of cellulite on your body, consult your dermatologist to determine the best treatment for you.
