Calcium carbonate and vitamin D are frequently taken together in a supplemental form. People take this combination supplement for benefits related to a calcium deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and enhanced absorption of calcium from having vitamin D in the same supplement. As with any supplement, side effects may occur and being mindful of these prior to starting the supplement can decrease potential harmful scenarios. Supplements should be taken only under doctor supervision.
Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea and vomiting may occur with the use of any supplements, as well as with calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Nausea and vomiting are the body's response to ingestion of something foreign introduced into the body. Taking this supplement with food and water can help relieve these symptoms; taking before bed may also help.
Loss of Appetite
Loss of appetite is a potential side effect of vitamin D and calcium supplementation, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center and Drugs.com. The reason for this side effect is unclear, but it could potentially occur. Making the time to eat in the event of loss of appetite is important since eating regularly helps prevent side effects and adverse events from occurring as a result of taking supplements. Eating enhances absorption of supplements, as well.
Constipation
Constipation may occur as a side effect of taking calcium carbonate and vitamin D. A study in the April 2006 issue of "Archives of Internal Medicine" assessed the effect of calcium supplementation and found 13 percent of patients experienced constipation as a result of taking the calcium supplement. Constipation was higher in the supplemental group compared to the placebo group. Increasing water and fiber intake while taking a calcium and vitamin D supplement may help decrease constipation symptoms.
