A holistic liver detox is performed to cleanse, assist and revitalize the liver, our body's primary fat-burning and detoxifying organ. Natural, whole-body detox agents include specific whole foods, juices, herbs and even yoga postures and deep breathing exercises. All of these can be useful in combating the symptoms of toxic buildup or a sluggish liver, such as fatigue, indigestion and weight gain. As with any holistic healing method, consult your doctor before beginning a liver detox.

Purpose

The human liver acts as a purification system for the entire body, clearing toxins and harmful bacteria from the blood and converting them into waste. While some toxins, known as metabolic wastes, are simply the result of this process, we also ingest toxins in the form of food pesticides and additives, alcohol, stimulants and other drugs, and are exposed to other water and airborne pollutants on a daily basis. Therefore, a liver detox is intended to maximize the body's ability to eliminate toxins and prevent or alleviate liver disease by supporting liver function and reducing intake of potentially harmful substances.

Diet

Modern American diets tend to be high in sugar, caffeine and simple carbohydrates -- substances that create an energy rush and subsequent "crash" effect. The body releases extra cortisol, a natural stimulant, to restore balance in the wake of a sugar or caffeine crash; but cortisol slows the liver's detoxification process, and thus impedes the metabolism and elimination of these and other substances. Therefore, a natural first step in the detoxification process is a modified diet. Liver detox diets suggest a focus on whole, fresh foods free of caffeine and simple sugars. A sample detox day might begin with a morning tonic of lemon juice and hot water to stimulate the bowel and cleanse the liver, followed by meals of fresh vegetable juices, berries, dark leafy vegetables and bitter greens, omega-3-rich walnuts and flax seeds, avocados and plenty of water.

Herbs

In addition to liver-friendly foods, a detox diet might include herbs, spices and teas that help to cleanse and protect the liver. Garlic, onions, turmeric and cayenne pepper are safe and natural detoxifiers that can easily be added to cooked vegetables or juices, while dandelion and milk-thistle teas provide gentle internal cleansing. Consult your doctor before using any herbal teas or supplements as part of a holistic liver detox.

Yoga

Yoga can be a powerful aid in the detoxifying process, helping to calm the nervous system and counteract the release of cortisol while increasing circulation and blood flow throughout the body. While any gentle stretching or exercise will aid the liver in its cleansing process, specific yoga postures including inversions, twists, forward bends and restorative poses are particularly effective in enhancing circulation, digestion and relaxation. Always practice yoga with a trained instructor before attempting postures on your own, to avoid misalignment and injury.

Warning

While the components of a holistic liver detox process are natural and safe, always consult a healthcare professional to make sure you aren't suffering from a more serious condition. Also, it is important to ease yourself in and out of a detoxification process: it is not safe to suddenly eliminate caffeine or prescription drugs, or to suddenly and severely alter your usual diet. Always consider your individual health history, nutritional needs and routines when planning a detox program.
