For most women, the transition phase known as menopause occurs between ages 45 and 55, according to MedlinePlus. During menopause, a woman's menstrual cycle slows and eventually ceases. In the process, a host of uncomfortable symptoms occur due to the loss of estrogen and progesterone. Vitamins are important to supporting health and reducing menopause symptoms. Talk to a doctor about appropriate supplements.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins for menopausal women provide a combination of vitamins and minerals for this stage of life. Many of the products on pharmacy shelves contain magnesium, vitamins B, C and E, all of which may help curb symptoms and support a woman's health. However, a one-size-fits-all approach may not be appropriate for women who have deficiencies or underlying medical conditions.

Vitamin D

After menopause, decreased estrogen levels can promote bone loss, which may lead to osteoporosis -- the most common type of bone disease, affecting 1 in 5 women over age 50, according to MedlinePlus. Getting enough calcium at this time is crucial to bone health. Women should get at least 1,200 mg per day of calcium and 800 to 1,000 international units of vitamin D-3, which helps the body absorb calcium.

Black Cohosh

The roots and stems of the black cohosh plant are used to make capsules and pills, which historically relieved rheumatism. Recent uses, however, include reducing hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The herb is considered safe for short-term use, though not for women with liver disorders. Talk to a doctor about the safety of herbal vitamins.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E, an anti-oxidant and immune-system booster, is sometimes used to relieve mild hot flashes in menopause, though its benefits are not proven. In addition, taking more than 400 international units is not safe, according to MayoClinic.com. Talk to a doctor about the right dosage.
