Weight Watchers is a common diet plan that focuses on portioned foods and eating a healthy diet. The company introduced its Core Food Plan in 2004 to help those that had trouble counting points for every meal. Dieters can eat as much as they need to feel full, as long as it's from the Weight Watcher core food group. These foods include lean meats, fruits and vegetables, whole grains and soup. Other foods should be counted and eaten in moderation.
Lean Meats
Lean meats are necessary for essential proteins, but many meat products contain high amounts of fat. The fat is what makes meat unhealthy, so Weight Watchers included lean meats in its list of Core Foods. Lean meats include chicken, fish, ham and turkey. Some red meat is considered lean if it's indicated on the packaging. If the dieter indulges in some red meat during a meal, the excess fat should be removed from the meat. This can lower the fat intake and calories.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are a part of several diets, mainly for the foods' low-calorie content filled with vitamins and nutrients. Certain fruits are higher in carbohydrate content, even though this sugar is considered healthier than common table sugar. Fruits like peaches, nectarines, watermelons, limes and lemons are low in sugar. Vegetables are always healthy, but some are better for diets. Starchy vegetables, like potatoes, peas and corn should be eaten in moderation. Instead, the Weight Watchers core foods include beans, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes and spinach.
Whole Grains and Cereals
Cereals are included in the Weight Watchers Core Food Plan, but many of the common brands on the shelves are excluded. Cereals allowed in the core group are puffed and shredded wheat with no added sugars. Any cereal with bran content only is also a part of the core food group. Whole grains are allowed in moderation. The Weight Watchers core food group also includes whole grain pasta and breads, although these foods should be a small portion of a meal. Brown rice is also allowed in the Weight Watcher core food meal planning.
