An EZ curl bar is a variation of the standard barbell. The bar has bent sections in the middle of the bar for hand grasps. These ease pressure on the wrist joints by allowing a more natural grip on the bar, which makes lifting more comfortable and safer. The EZ curl bar takes the pressure off your wrists and is a good option for exercises that put stress on the wrists or elbows.
Standard EZ Curl Bar
The standard EZ curl bar is normally around 47 inches long and can weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 lbs. You can add weight plates on each side of the EZ curl bar and secure them with plastic or metal collars. Weight plates start at 2.5 lbs. One plate on each side of the bar increases the weight by 5 lbs. Standard EZ curl bars allow you to change the weight as needed.
Olympic Curl Bar
An Olympic EZ curl bar is heavier and longer than a standard EZ curl bar. The length can be as long as 57 inches with a weight of around 15 to 25 lbs. The ends enable a swivel action and fit all 2-inch Olympic plates.
Fixed Weight EZ Curl Bar
A fixed-weight EZ curl bar has weight plates permanently welded to each end. They come in weights as low as 20 lbs. and go all the way up to 100 lbs. The downside to fixed-weight EZ curl bars is you cannot choose the step-up value in weight. Gyms may have a standing rack with spacers to hold the different-sized fixed-weight EZ curl bars. They come in increments of 5 lbs., but many gyms only carry fixed weight ranges in 10- to 30-lb. increments. The stands can be unorganized and a specific weight may not be available. If you are working in a pyramid-up style increasing the weight each set, you will not be able to add small weight increments, or a weight may be unavailable.
