Moving and securing wheelchairs on a bus is a task that may be performed by the person in the wheelchair, another person accompanying the person in the wheelchair, or the bus driver.

Time Frame

Since moving and securing a single wheelchair on a bus usually takes just a couple of minutes, it won't be a significant calorie burner regardless of who performs the task.

Factors

According to the ShapeSense fitness calculator, pushing a wheelchair burns about 4 calories per minute, though this figure may vary by the age, height, weight and other characteristics of the person performing the task. Standing while doing light activity, such as securing a wheelchair, burns about 3 calories per minute, and sitting while doing light activity burns about 2 calories per minute. If the person in the wheelchair weighs 150 lbs. and propels himself, he'll burn about 6 calories per minute, according to the Shape Up America! physical activity selector.

Effects

Assuming two minutes of activity, one minute to move and one minute to secure the wheelchair, the individuals performing the task will burn 7 to 8 calories altogether, depending on who moves the wheelchair and who secures it. Again, this range is an estimate and may vary from person to person and from situation to situation.
