The National Institutes of Health states that dialysis is needed when your kidneys fail. Your kidneys keep your blood clean and produce hormones that strengthen your bones. The National Kidney Foundation states that dialysis helps maintain a balance of chemicals, including potassium, sodium, and bicarbonate, in your body. If your kidneys are not working, dialysis also helps control your blood pressure. Science Daily states in a journal article in the "Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation," that exercise during dialysis removes more urea, a toxin in the body. Riding an exercise bike during dialysis makes dialysis treatment more effective.

Step 1

Talk to the dialysis nurse or technician and inform them about any health concerns you have before beginning your dialysis session. Ask the nurse or technician approximately how long your exercise session will last during dialysis. Share with them any concerns you may have.

Step 2

Begin riding the exercise bike while being careful that the dialysis line continues to function properly. Inform the nurse or technician if you need to rest or are feeling lightheaded.

Step 3

Allow the nurse or technician to check your vital signs, including your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and breathing. Continue riding the exercise bike until you are asked to stop or until you need a rest.

Step 4

After you have completed your time on the exercise bike, allow the nurse or technician to recheck your vital signs and rest, taking several slow, deep breaths. Continue your dialysis session and share any questions or concerns you may have about exercise and dialysis.

Tips and Warnings

  • You will ride an exercise bike for about an hour during the first two hours of your dialysis session. BNET, The CBS Interactive Business Network, references the "Nephrology Nursing Journal" and states to have your blood pressure checked every 15 minutes during your exercise. Your pulse may increase during exercise. The nurse will assess and monitor you frequently.
