A sinus infection is a common condition in the United States, affecting over 30 million people yearly, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Eucalyptus is an herbal remedy commonly used to treat a sinus infection because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties. Before using any herbal supplement, talk with your doctor because herbs may interact with other drugs or cause complications with some medical conditions.

About

A sinus infection is caused by allergies, the common cold or nasal deformities. Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation in the sinus cavity, according to MayoClinic.com. Acute sinus infections lasting less than eight weeks are commonly treated with rest and increased fluid intakes, while chronic sinusitis may be treated with prescribed antibiotics and corticosteroid nasal sprays.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a sinus infection include headaches, fever, minor body chills, nasal congestion, a runny nose, sneezing, throat irritation, postnasal drip and sinus pressure. The inflammation in the sinus cavity leads to excess pressure against various parts of the head, including the eyes, ears and cheeks. Postnasal drip is a condition where trapped mucus drips down the back of the throat, causing a queasy stomach, a sore throat and coughing.

Eucalyptus Treatment

UMMC states that studies have shown that eucalyptus oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. One study found that people using 200 mg of eucalyptus oil three time daily significantly reduced sinusitis symptoms. However, if the sinus infection is viral, the use of eucalyptus may not be as effective. Eucalyptus for sinus infections has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and should be used with caution and under a doctor's supervision.

Other Treatments

Decongestants are commonly used to reduce swelling and inflammation in the sinus cavity by restricting the amount of blood flow. Antihistamines may be recommended for people who are suffering from a sinus infection caused by allergies, and pain relievers can help alleviate sinus pressure pain. Natural treatments for sinus health include rest, increased water intake, inhaling steam, and the use of saline sprays or washes.

Consideration

MedlinePlus recommends calling your doctor if your symptoms last for more than 10 days or do not respond to over-the-counter medications. if you develop a severe headache, blurred vision or a swollen forehead, seek immediate medical attention. An untreated sinus infection can develop into meningitis, an ear infection or an eye infection.
