During cold weather, the frosty temperatures can make working out seem like a hassle. On top of that, add the social festivities that often occur during the year's coldest temperatures, such as Christmas and New Year's Eve, and exercising may seem like even less of an option. Don't get caught in a winter workout slump. Cold weather or not, several tips can help you continue to exercise in an effective and safe manner.
Try Winter Sports
Winter is a prime time to try a new fitness routine and take advantage of the winter wonderland around you. In fact, two common winter sports --- cross-country skiing and snowshoeing --- are some of the best fat-burning cardio activities available, according to Dr. Jason Karp in an interview with "Men's Fitness" magazine. Make it a social outing with friends, and you can get your workout while taking part in a fun holiday get-together.
Watch Your Diet
What you eat is a crucial part of your overall exercise routine, and a bad diet can quickly undo any fitness gains you've made during the year. It can be especially difficult during the holiday season, but as Columbia University reports, "it may be cold outside but good nutrition should never hibernate!" Enjoy high-protein holiday foods like turkey and ham, but limit your enjoyment of baked goods, desserts and sugary drinks. A careful diet can help make up for any decrease in exercise due to the cold weather.
Dress Up
If it's cold outside but you still enjoy your outdoor exercise, such as running or jogging, make sure you dress appropriately. Dress up in multiple layers of thin clothing. This helps to trap air and keep you warm without the bulk or weight of one or two heavy garments. For the best results during the winter, Purdue University North Central suggests using workout gear that's made of polyester or polypropylene, as these wick away chilling moisture while simultaneously insulating your body heat.
Reduce Workout Time
Several health conditions, such as exercise-induced asthma or poor blood circulation, can be made worse when you workout in cold weather, says Dr. David Musnick in an interview with "Shape." Thus, the magazine recommends keeping the duration of outdoor fitness routines under 40 minutes on cold days. Alternatively, make use of your local gym.
Wear a Hat
It's critically important to wear warm headgear while working out in cold weather. This is because you lose the majority of your body heat through your head.
