Nutrisystem launches its weight-loss program in 1972, and as of 2010 markets a diet based in the glycemic index. Nutrisystem offers full meals that require little preparation, and its diet planners help clients control their eating. Calorie restriction accounts for weight loss on this plan, though calorie count depends on certain factors.

Gender

Nutrisystem offers different meal plans for men and women, due to different body composition and energy needs. Men are allowed to consume up to 1,500 calories per day, while women are allotted roughly 1,200, the company's website reports.

Plan Type

Nutrisystem offers three different plan types for men and women: Basic, Silver and Vegetarian. While the calorie content remains roughly the same for all, food choices vary according to dietary needs and preferences.

Individual Choice

To cater to individual needs, Nutrisystem provides some flexibility in daily meal plans. You can choose to incorporate some of its optional suggestions, swap out one breakfast item for another, or add a snack at the end of the day to fill out discretionary calories. The general calorie range remains approximately the same, but individuals can still tailor their diets.
