Metabolic syndrome X, or metabolic syndrome, is defined by the University of Maryland Medical Center as having at least three or more metabolic conditions that include high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein, HDL, high blood pressure, insulin resistance or obesity, especially with an apple-shaped body. The more of these conditions you have, the greater the health risks. UMMC recommends being aggressive by tackling all symptoms, by utilizing medications, exercise, quitting smoking and losing weight.
Low-Glycemic Index Diet
Different carbohydrates behave differently in the body, according to the University of Sydney in Australia. It developed a glycemic index of carbohydrate foods and how blood glucose is affected by them. The lower the glycemic index number, the less effect on your blood sugar and your insulin levels. Any food containing carbs that come in under 55 is considered low on the scale. You still need to be aware of portion sizes, but on this diet, the idea is to produce as little as possible fluctuation of your insulin levels, resulting in lowered insulin resistance and increased weight loss.
Mediterranean Diet
MayoClinic.com considers the Mediterranean Diet to be heart healthy. This eating plan adopts many of the traditional styles of Mediterranean foods, including olive oil and red wine. The Mediterranean Diet reduces heart disease and the incidence of cancer. It incorporates such foods as whole grains, fruits, beans, nuts and olive oils and uses limited quantities of meat, especially red meats.
Low-Carbohydrate Diet
A low-carb diet limits the intake and amounts of foods containing carbohydrates. It works under the premise that if insufficient carbs are present in your diet, your body will be forced to use proteins and fats to produce energy, thus using your body's excess fat stores. The diet stresses meats, fish and poultry, eggs and non-starchy vegetables, such as lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli and kale. Your intake of grains, sweets, baked goods, fruits and pastas are restricted to about 50 g per day. This diet reduces insulin fluctuations and promotes weight loss. Examples of this diet are the Zone and the Atkins diets.
