Avocados are nutrient-rich fruit that contains no sodium and no cholesterol. They are a good source of monounsaturated fat, which the American Heart Association believes can help lower blood cholesterol levels when it replaces saturated fat in the diet.
Serving Size
One cup of cubed avocado has 240 calories and 22 grams of fat. Although the total fat content is high, most is the "good" monounsaturated fat. Only 3 grams are saturated fat. One ounce contains almost 20 vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
Potassium
Potassium is used by the body to regulate blood pressure and body fluid levels. A one-ounce serving of cubed avocado contains 21 percent of the advised daily amount of this nutrient.
Lutein
There are 81 micrograms of lutein in a one-ounce serving of avocado. Lutein is believed to help keep eyesight healthy as the body ages, according to the California Avocado Commission.
Folate
There is almost a quarter of the daily recommended amount of folate in a one-ounce ounce serving. According to the American Heart Association, folate is an important nutrient for the heart, possibly preventing heart disease and stroke.
Many Other Nutrients
Avocados also contain phytonutrients, which are believed by the California Avocado Commission to prevent chronic diseases. They are also a good source of fiber, iron, vitamins E and C, protein and beta-carotene.
