According to the Mayo Clinic website, proponents of blood-type diets, or "biotype diets" believe you should base what you eat around your type of blood, A, B, AB, or O. While there has not been solid scientific evidence to support a diet tailored to your blood type, there are many recommendations for what foods are more beneficial for specific blood types, including type O. The type O diet is centered on lean meats, vegetables and fruits and avoiding grains and dairy products.

Lean Meats and Seafood

People with blood type O seem to easily digest meat and benefit from a diet rich in high quality, lean protein. According to Dr. Michael Lam, nutritional specialist, people with blood type O will benefit most from beef, veal, lamb, venison, cod and herring. It is also recommended that type O avoid fatty or processed meats like bacon, pork and smoked salmon.

Vegetables

It is believed that type O blood may have difficulty clotting. People with type O blood should include vegetables high in vitamin K, including kale, collard greens and spinach in their diets. Other recommended vegetables include artichokes, garlic, onions and pumpkin. Type Os may be susceptible to thyroid troubles, and should avoid cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Other vegetables to avoid include avocados, eggplants, corn and potatoes.

Fruits

According to Dr. Peter D'Adamo, founder of the blood type eating plan, type O people tend to be predisposed to ulcers. Fruits that are blue or purple tend to be alkaline that helps neutralize the high acid content generally found in the digestive tract of type O dieters. Fruits to include in the type O eating plan include figs, prunes and plums. While high in acid, grapefruit and most berries are also recommended. Type O eaters should avoid coconut, oranges, strawberries and melon as they tend to be high in acid or mold, both of which can agitate the digestive system.
