The Daniel Fast is based on the diet outlined in the book of Daniel in the Bible. Used by many people as an introduction to the practice of prayer and fasting, the fast is very strict with an emphasis on self-denial and avoiding processed foods and chemicals. The full Daniel Fast is 21 days and is often done to start off the New Year or during Lent. Keep in mind that this fast is meant to restrict food for spiritual reasons, not weight loss.
History
In the first chapter of Daniel, the main portion of the diet is described. The prophet Daniel ate only fruits and vegetables and drank only water. Later in the book more rules are described: he does not eat any meat, bread, sweetened foods, or drink any wine. Modern day interpretations of these passages of the Bible include the avoidance of yeast, artificial flavors, chemicals, processed foods and caffeine.
Foods
The Daniel Fast is essentially a vegan diet with additional restrictions. The fast includes any fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and water. The fast also includes beans, nuts, and tofu. All meat, eggs, dairy products, leavened bread, and any processed foods are eliminated. In addition, the fast excludes all sweeteners, caffeine, alcohol, and anything with artificial flavoring or coloring. With these guidelines in mind, the creators of the fast recommend reading all food labels before eating food to be sure it follows the rules of the fast.
Recipes
There are several Daniel Fast cookbooks on the market. Recipes include things like porridge, salads, soups, stews, and stir fry. The diet might initially sound restrictive and hard to follow but most vegan recipes will also work with the fast. The fast is meant to teach self-discipline and provide a focus on spiritual matters through self-denial. It requires more time, planning, and cooking most meals from scratch.
Health
The Daniel Fast is very healthy. Eliminating meat, eggs, dairy, and sweet foods also eliminates most fat and cholesterol. Avoiding caffeine, alcohol, and artificial flavorings and preservatives, in addition to drinking extra water, can have a detoxifying effect on the body. With the main portion of the fast made up of fruits and vegetables, the diet provides plenty of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. While the purpose of the Daniel Fast is for spiritual and personal growth, it is also a healthy way to eat and may result in weight loss, lowered cholesterol, and better control of blood glucose levels.
