Oral surgery encompasses a variety of procedures including, but not limited to, the extraction of teeth; correction of skeletal abnormalities due to trauma or developmental dysfunction; removal of pathological lesions; and placement of dental implants. Following the appropriate dietary recommendations after an oral surgery procedure can optimize healing around the surgical site. Two basic food categories are soft and solid foods. Consult with your dentist for additional dietary modifications.

Soft Foods

Soft foods are recommended after oral surgery procedures. Consuming substances that are hard or crunchy can damage the gum tissue surrounding the surgical site and place an excessive amount of force on the teeth and muscles of the face. Soups, milkshakes, liquid nutritional substitutes, broths, cooked vegetables, soft fruits and yogurt will provide your mouth time to relax and heal after a surgical procedure.

Solid Foods

Cooked cereal, mashed potatoes, pasta, soft bread and crackers are examples of solid foods that do not require a substantial amount of biting force. Solid foods can assist you in achieving the recommended daily dietary allowances. Incorporating solid foods will also help you not to feel as if you are limited to a liquid diet after surgery.

Foods to Avoid

The gum tissues of the mouth are soft and susceptible to irritation and damage, especially after an oral surgery procedure. Spicy ingredients and dishes that contain peppers will irritate the gum tissues, cause unnecessary discomfort and slow the healing process. Prior to the procedure, consult with your dentist to determine when your regular dietary habits may be resumed.
