While fishing can become involved with a need for complicated tackle and gear and an in-depth knowledge of fish behavior, environmental changes and boating rules and regulations, it can also be as easy as a pole, a line and a hook. Sitting on the edge of a pond or river, and just fishing is relaxing. And there is nothing so exciting as actually catching a fish on simple gear. Bamboo, known for its flexibility and strength, makes a great fishing pole that is easy to build.

Step 1

Choose a piece of bamboo between 8 and 10 feet in length with a thin tip and a base around 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

Step 2

Cut the tip back to the point where the bamboo is about the diameter of a pencil. Make a shallow notch around the tip about one inch below the end of the tip to hold the fishing line. Be careful not to cut too deeply.

Step 3

Varnish the pole to help prevent water damage. Allow the varnish to dry completely.

Step 4

Select a fishing line. For bamboo poles, 6-to-8 lb. test monofilament line is perfect.

Step 5

Cut a length of fishing line from the spool a few feet longer than the pole itself. Tie the line around the notch in the tip of the pole using a good strong knot to make sure it will not slip or come undone.

Step 6

Tie a #6 or #8 fishing hook to the other end of the line. Use a good fishing knot such as a palomar of snell knot (see link in Resources). These are easy to learn and will not come undone or break under pressure. Cut any excess line off.

Step 7

Crimp a number of split shot weights to the line about 18 inches above the hook. Use just enough to keep the line in place in the water. An optional bobber can be added.

  • 6-to-8 lb. test monofilament fishing line
