Common thyroid concerns are hyperthyroid conditions that involve an overactive thyroid and hypothyroid conditions, characterized by an underactive thyroid. A number of herbs contain components that can improve either an overactive or underactive thyroid. Be cautious when taking herbs as they are not regulated and many interact with medications and other supplements. Speak to your doctor before taking herbs for your thyroid and do not use herbs as a substitute for thyroid medication.
Kelp
Kelp, a type of seaweed high in iodine, is thought to improve thyroid function in those with hypothyroid, or underactive thyroid, conditions. A 2003 study by C.D. Clark in "Endocrine Practice" found that study participants with normal thyroid function who took kelp on a short-term basis had a raised level of a thyroid-stimulating hormone. Researchers noted that more research is needed on the relationship of kelp and thyroid function on a prolonged basis. Consult a doctor before using kelp for a thyroid condition.
Coleus Forskohlii
The herb coleus forskohlii is another herbal treatment for an underactive thyroid, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. This herb, part of the mint family, works to encourage thyroid function. However, more research is needed on this herbal treatment, as studies have not yet backed up its effectiveness. Avoid this treatment method if you are on nitrates or drugs that thin your blood. Speak to a physician before taking coleus forskohlii for your thyroid.
Bugleweed
For an overactive thyroid, try bugleweed as a natural herbal method of treatment. Bugleweed is found to lower levels of a thyroid-stimulating hormone. However, prolonged use or taking large doses of bugleweed could lead to your thyroid enlarging. Also, it can counteract medications for your thyroid. Speak to your physician before using bugleweed as a thyroid treatment option.
Lemon Balm
Lemon balm, found in the mint family and also known as Melissa, is another herbal option for an overactive thyroid. Unlike herbs that encourage thyroid-stimulating hormones, lemon balm stops thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins that incite receptor sites of the thyroid, according to the American Herb Association. Consult with a physician before using lemon balm to treat your thyroid condition.
