In general, cancer begins when a change occurs in a cell's DNA called mutation. The mutation causes the cell to grow and divide uncontrollably. These dividing cells clump together and form tumors. A cancerous tumor can kill the nearby healthy tissue or break off from the original site to spread throughout your body. Certain herbs may curb common cancer complications, but you must always consult with your doctor before using them.

Green Tea

The most abundant polyphenol in green tea, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, has been shown to possess excellent growth inhibitory and apoptotic effects in cancer cells, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Resistance toward apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is critical to a cancer cell's survival. Green tea polyphenols help to overcome this resistance of cancer cells toward apoptosis.

Garlic

Sulfur-containing compounds found in garlic are associated with protection against many cancers, according to the University of Michigan Health System. Crushing or chopping garlic releases allicin, the principle medical ingredient of garlic. It may prevent cell damage -- the most common pathway for cancer -- caused by free radicals found in your body.

Ginseng

Ginseng, the dried root of a medicinal plant in the family Araliaceae, has purported antioxidant and antitumor promoting activities, according to the University of Texas Cooperative Pharmacy Program. Ginsenosides, constituents found in most ginseng species, may boost the immune system of your body, possibly helping it fight against cancer, notes the Oregon State University.
