Supplements for Immune Enhancement

The immune system contains cells that protect the body from invading bacteria, viruses, parasites and cancer cells. Also called white blood cells, immune cells protect the body by producing antibodies, which attack foreign substances. Certain types of white blood cells engulf foreign material and destroy it. Certain types of supplements can enhance the immune system; however, consult a physician before taking any supplement.

Zinc

A healthy immune system requires zinc, a trace element that your body does not produce on its own. A zinc deficiency results in increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. For example, diarrhea caused by a bacterial infection is more prevalent in children with a zinc deficiency. Zinc also plays a role in respiratory health and helps to prevent pneumonia. In the elderly population, 25 mg per day of zinc has the potential to increase the concentration of immune cells, thus preventing the occurrence of illness, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Consult a physician before taking zinc.

Selenium

Selenium is an essential mineral; therefore, you must consume foods or take supplements with selenium to sustain required levels in the blood. Selenium maintains a healthy immune system by producing white blood cells, which are the cells that attack foreign bacteria and viruses. Elderly persons who supplement with selenium and zinc have an enhanced immune response when inoculated with the flu vaccine; therefore, enhancing their protection against the flu. Consult a physician before taking selenium.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E mainly acts as an antioxidant, clearing the body of free radicals that can cause cell and tissue damage; however, vitamin E also plays a role in the immune system, particularly in the elderly population. Vitamin E has been shown to decrease the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections and the common cold. Vitamin E; however, does not effect the incidence of lower respiratory tract infections. Significant immunity enhancements are observed with 200 intentional units of vitamin E per day; however, consult a physician before taking vitamin E, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

Probiotics

Your intestines contain approximately 400 different types of beneficial bacteria. Some bacteria digest the food we eat; others produce essential vitamins, such as biotin and vitamin K. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria, or the bacteria that cause disease. Probiotics also stimulate the immune system and promote digestion. Probiotics are naturally found in fermented foods like yogurt; however, you can purchase probiotics in capsule or powder form. Probiotics may cause intestinal gas or bloating; at high doses they can cause loose stool; therefore, consult a physician before taking probiotics.
