It can be difficult to find a whole-grain breakfast cereal acceptable for your diet when you are avoiding specific grains. While rice and corn allergies and sensitivities are not common, they do exist. Most sweetened cereals contain some form of rice or corn -- as they are often sweetened with rice or corn syrups -- or contain bran, starches and gums made from rice or corn. Check the label on all products because ingredients vary by brand and product. Consult a dietitian to help identify rice and corn-free options.

Hot Cereals

There are a few hot cereal options when avoiding corn and rice. Oat cereals, including oat bran and oatmeal are generally safe as they usually contain oats only. Cream of wheat, farina and bulgur wheat hot cereals are safe options. Arrowhead Mills also makes a Bear Mush and 4 Grain plus Flax cereal that do not contain rice or corn. Check labels on pre-sweetened and instant options as these may contain corn syrup.

Flake Cereals

Most flake cereals contain some form of rice or corn, so be sure to check all labels. Companies like Arrowhead Mills and Nature's Path provide natural or organic flake cereals that use fruit juice or cane sugar as a sweetener. Look for spelt, wheat and oat flake cereals with natural sweeteners.

Puffed Cereals

Millet, wheat, and kamut puffed cereals are available that do not contain rice or corn. These cereals are made from the puffed grain with nothing else added. Both Nature's Path and Arrowhead Mills offer cold puffed cereal options.
