Maintaining a healthy weight is a vital part of preventing disease and other health complications. However, it can be difficult to know how many calories your body needs to maintain your weight. To make sure your getting the right number of calories, follow the proper calculations.
Men
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends the following formula for finding your daily calories. Moderately active men should multiply their body weight by 15, and sedentary men should multiply by 13. Therefore, a 150-lb. man should eat between 1,950 and 2,250 calories.
Women
Active women should multiply their weight in pounds by 12, while sedentary women should multiply their weight by 10. A 150-lb. woman needs between 1,500 and 1,800 calories per day.
Activity Level
Remember that your activity level directly affects your calorie needs. The National Institutes of Health defines "moderately active" as participating in physical activities for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. If your exercise routine is more strenuous than this, you will need more calories.
