1. Crank the Core

Strong, buff abs are more important to our overall health and wellness than they are to looking good at the gym. While we all like to show off a six-pack when we bare our midriff, you should incorporate regular abdominal crunches in your exercise routine for a multitude of reasons. The abs protect much of your core from injury and stress caused by sports and daily living. As you age, strong abs will help you retain good posture and can assist in the war against arthritis.

2. Find the Middle Ground

Abdominal crunches are exercises that tighten and stretch the muscles surrounding the stomach and chest areas. They are typically done in a prone position and do not require any special equipment to get the maximum benefit. Abdominal crunches target those muscles that affect our entire body and its general health. The exercise is pretty much what the name implies a hard push on the abdominal muscles in front and on the sides of your middle torso.

3. Get Down

You can follow a couple good techniques to provide a solid abdominal crunch workout. Lie on the floor and extend your arms and legs upwards. Reach your fingers to your toes. Alternatively, lie flat and hook your fingers behind your head and, without using your arms to pull yourself up. Then try to touch your forehead to your knees. For another ab exercise, get on your back, bend your knees and wrap your arms around them. Pull, hold and release. Sit now, with your knees bent and your hands entwined in front. Now twist your body to one side as far as you can. Repeat each of these exercises in repetitions of eight to 10 and then go through them all two more times.

4. Tap the Spine

To remain active in most any sport, you need to keep your back in shape. Nothing supports the back as well as good, strong abdominal muscles. In order to insure a long active lifestyle, you must do everything you can to protect the back.

5. Complete the Workout

Abdominal crunches will increase your chances of staying active as you age. These killer abs will definitely increase your chances of getting some wolf whistles and envious stares at the beach and in the gym. A regular exercise routine that includes 100 abdominal crunches, three or four days a week will improve your outlook and how you look. You'll end up standing taller because of the great muscle support and because of the self-esteem you've created.
