Side Effects of Omega-3 Soft Chews

Commonly known as fish oil, omega-3-acid ethyl esters work in your body to help decrease the levels of part of your cholesterol. You need your cholesterol, which is made up of high-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins and triglycerides, to maintain a healthy level to avoid clogging your arteries and potentially causing heart problems, high blood pressure and strokes. Omega-3s help you lower your triglycerides, a form of fat that can clog blood vessels. Standard omega-3 fish oil capsules are typically large and difficult to swallow. Omega-3 soft chews may provide an alternative, especially for children.

Flu-Like Syndrome

Like many types of medications and supplements, omega-3 soft chews may produce a condition known as flu-like syndrome, Drugs.com indicates. This usually occurs only when you start taking the supplement and usually goes away as your body acclimates to having omega-3 in your bodily system. It may, as the name indicates, produce symptoms you normally would experience if you had a cold or the flu. For example, you may develop a fever and chills. You also may feel a general aching in your muscles, as well as a headache. You may feel overly tired, even when rested. This syndrome also may produce throat soreness, nasal congestion and rhinitis. Flu-like syndrome should end as you get used to omega-3. If it produces severe symptoms or does not go away, consult your doctor about it.

Arrhythmia

More seriously, omega-3 soft chews may produce a change in your regular heart rate, MayoClinic.com reports. For example, your heart rate may speed up, an arrhythmia known as tachycardia. Your heart also may begin beating irregularly. Both of these problems can lead to heart attacks and strokes if left untreated. Either of these two serious side effects of omega-3 may accompany pain in your chest. MayoClinic.com recommends an immediate consultation with your physician if any type of change in your heart rate occurs.

Breathing Problems

Omega-3 soft chews also may cause serious adverse reactions in your respiratory system, MayoClinic.com states. You may suddenly find it difficult to breathe or feel shortness of breath. Your chest may feel tight or heavy, which may relate to either respiratory problems or cardiac problems associated with omega-3s. You also may wheeze, a condition in which you produce a high-pitched sound when you exhale your breath. Call your doctor immediately if any breathing problems develop.
