A wellness program is a comprehensive plan to improve the health of those participating in it. Whether for a work setting, your own personal development or for the health of your family, a wellness program should include attention to multiple key components of good health. Important components of a wellness program include diet, exercise, stress management and attention to medical issues, such as smoking cessation, high cholesterol and sun exposure, says the National Institutes of Health.
Step 1
Establish a healthy diet. A nutrient-rich diet that is low in saturated fat and sodium but high in natural, unprocessed foods is essential to physical health and the prevention or treatment of a number of medical conditions, says MayoClinic.com. Emphasize the main healthy food groups -- whole grains, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat or non-fat dairy and healthy fats.
Step 2
Begin a regular exercise program. Include cardiovascular exercise, such as running, walking, dancing, skating or swimming, to strengthen your heart and burn calories, and strength training to build muscle. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 20 to 30 minutes of exercise, three to five times per week.
Step 3
Find a way to manage stress. Effective stress management strategies include yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, physical activity and even pleasurable hobbies or socializing with friends.
Step 4
Address your health behaviors. You may have other wellness needs to incorporate into a relevant wellness program, such as quitting smoking, consistently taking necessary prescription medications, taking skin cancer prevention measures, or improving your emotional health. Incorporate these issues into a comprehensive wellness program for optimal health.
