Calcium, vitamin C and vitamin K all play an important role in building and healing bones and maintaining bone health. A diet rich in these minerals and vitamins can help heal fractured bones or bone conditions such as osteoporosis, in which bones become weak and are more prone to breaking and fractures.
Calcium
Foods rich in calcium may help bones heal. Medline Plus reports that calcium can treat osteoporosis. Research has shown, for example, that women have improved their bone strength after menopause by the increased consumption of calcium-rich foods. Good sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products such as yogurt, milk and cheese. Other good sources of calcium include sardines with bones, canned pink salmon with bones, tofu, almonds, collard greens and turnip greens.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C may also help bones. Vitamin C plays a role in repairing and maintaining healthy teeth, cartilage and bones in your body, according to Medline Plus. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges. Other sources include melons, strawberries, spinach and broccoli.
Vitamin K
Including vitamin K-rich foods in your diet may help your bones heal. According to a 2001 study in "Nutrition," vitamin K improved bone health in people by increasing bone mineral density. According to this study, there is also evidence that vitamin K in combination with vitamin D can have a significant impact on improving bone health. Good dietary sources of vitamin K include green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and Swiss chard. Other good sources include vegetable oils such as olive, canola and soybean.
