Biking equipment manufacturers offer rear-mounted child bike seats to carry children from 1 to 5 years of age or up to 40 lbs. These seats fit most adult bicycles. Safety features include a five-point harness and light deflectors. Since Consumer Reports warns these type of bike seats are probably less safe -- a child could experience a fall of around 3 feet -- your child should still wear a helmet for proper protection.
Step 1
Turn the seat bolt underneath the adult's bike seat counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench until it comes off.
Step 2
Place the U-bracket's open end -- provided with the child's bike seat -- over the seat bolt's hole, lining up the end hole on the U-bracket.
Step 3
Replace and twist the seat bolt clockwise to tighten it.
Step 4
Line up the left and right child bike seat supports with the holes on the U-brackets. Most models have up to five holes; choose the holes so that it positions the seat most comfortably for both you and your child.
Step 5
Place the provided bolts through the holes and turn clockwise to tighten.
Step 6
Place the short bracket into the long bracket's slotted end and position. Insert the bolts and turn to secure to the bike's rear fork near the wheel.
Step 7
Place the foot guard under the bike seat's front. Place the strips over each side's bike fork and thread each strip through the hole. Pull on the strip to tighten.
