How to Encourage Your Spouse to Lose Weight

If your spouse is overweight, bluntly telling him he needs to lose weight is not the best option. Instead, coax your partner into losing weight by changing your lifestyle and adopting him into your plan, rather than dictating a separate plan that he must follow alone.

Step 1

Stock the fridge with healthful snacks. When your spouse gets home from work, he is more apt to select healthful snacks if unhealthful options aren't available. Wash and cut up bite-sized pieces of celery, carrots, broccoli and other veggies, and offer low-fat Italian dressing or salsa as a dip.

Step 2

Stop eating out. Replace dinners at restaurants with a romantic evening at home. Light candles, dim the lights and present your spouse with a delicious, healthful meal.

Step 3

Participate in physical activities together. Instead of sitting around the house, go for a long bike ride, a walk or play tennis. Adding exercise into your relationship is not only healthful, it's fun.

Step 4

Lead by example. If you change your eating habits, it will help your spouse follow suit. Not only will keeping healthier food in the house encourage him to choose more nutritious food, he can see the challenge in keeping up with your weight loss.

Step 5

Cheer your partner on. If you notice your spouse's pants getting looser, shower him with compliments and tell him how wonderful he looks. Positive reinforcement could be what he needs to maintain his weight loss.

Tips and Warnings

  • Don't nag or pester your spouse. It could cause him to rebel and eat even more unhealthful food.
  • If you have health problems, consult your doctor before starting a diet.
