Dandruff is a condition that can affect almost anyone, and Mayo Clinic.com reports it can be difficult to treat. The appearance of your scalp can give you a clue as to the cause of the problem. A white, crusty appearance might indicate that the area is dry. Red, greasy patches can mean the skin on your scalp produces too much oil. Regardless of what causes your dandruff to occur, it is not a serious condition. Treatment is available commercially from a dandruff shampoo. To save money, try a DIY remedy.

Shampoo From Scratch

Step 1

Heat 2 cups of distilled water on the stove or in the microwave. Bring the water to a boil.

Step 2

Stir the soft soap into the hot water, then set the mixture aside and allow it to cool.

Step 3

Add the potash, rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil to the liquid once it reaches room temperature. Mix well.

Step 4

Pour the shampoo into a bottle and store until you are ready to wash your hair.

Convert Basic Shampoo to a Dandruff Formula

Step 1

Pour 1/4 cup of shampoo into a blender. Choose a shampoo that does not contain a conditioner. Avoid commercial dandruff shampoos or oily hair treatments.

Step 2

Add the apple cider vinegar, apple juice, rum extract and cloves to the blender.

Step 3

Run the blender on low for 30 seconds to thoroughly mix the ingredients.

Step 4

Transfer the blender contents to a storage container or bottle. Refrigerate until you are ready to wash your hair. According to website Easy-Homemade-Recipes, discard the mixture if you do not use the shampoo after three days.

Tips and Warnings

  • Over-washing hair can dry the scalp and cause dandruff. If you have dandruff, try washing hair one or twice a week. To style, wet hair or apply only a conditioner. Rinse hair thoroughly to remove all the shampoo to avoid irritation.
  • If you have a medical condition contributing to the dandruff, such as psoriasis or eczema, talk to your doctor about the best treatments.
