Losing weight slowly at a rate of 1 to 2 lbs. per week is best, according to MedlinePlus. Slow weight loss has several benefits, including eating enough calories to get the nutrients your body needs and preserving lean muscle mass. If you want to lose 30 lbs. quickly, you may want to aim for a rate of 3 or 4 lbs. per week. However, you can still use healthy methods instead of relying on fad diets.

Eat Enough Calories

While you may think that severely cutting back on calories will boost weight loss, it doesn't. When you don't eat enough, your metabolism slows down and you start to lose lean muscle mass. You're also more likely to feel irritable and tired, which can increase cravings. Women should consume no fewer than 1,500 calories when dieting and men should consume no fewer than 1,800, according to MedlinePlus. If you are also exercising, you will need to increase your calorie intake slightly.

Work Out Every Day

Instead of taking a day off between workouts, do either 30 minutes of cardio or strength training every day, advises Lee Labrada, author of "The Lean Body Promise." As he puts it, you will lose weight much more quickly and just 2 1/2 hours out of your 168-hour week isn't much to sacrifice to get the weight loss you desire. To reduce the risk of injury, spend at least five minutes warming up and five minutes cooling down afterward. Exercise at moderate intensity if you're going to be active each day; vigorous-intensity activities, such as running or high-impact aerobics, are much more likely to cause injury.

Drink More Water

Chances are you aren't drinking enough water, which is the case with at least 66 percent of Americans, according to Boston College. Water is essential for many functions in the body, including digestion and metabolism. A study presented at the 240th American Chemical Society revealed that drinking water before meals can reduce calorie consumption. Brenda Davy, lead author of the study from Virginia Tech, says that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals three times a day lost about 5 lbs. more than dieters who didn't increase their water intake. Boston College recommends drinking between 8 and 12 cups of water daily.

Do a Detox

Too many toxins in your body can disrupt bodily systems, such as digestion and metabolism. According to "21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet," the damage toxins cause in your body can make it very difficult, if not impossible, for some people to lose weight. A simple way to detoxify your body involves eating more fiber from sources such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose organic brands to reduce your exposure to toxins and drink filtered or distilled water instead of tap water. Also, saunas and hot medicated baths with ingredients, such as sea salts, are also detoxifying treatments.
