How to Help Cleanse the Colon

Colon cleansing is one aspect of the "detoxification" trend in alternative medicine. The theory behind colon cleansing is that toxins can accumulate in the colon from undigested food. These toxins affect the whole body, according to cleansing proponents, causing allergies, arthritis, asthma and other health problems, the Mayo Clinic says. Although the effectiveness of colon cleansing for promoting health has not been scientifically proven, by supporting your body throughout the process, you can reduce the side effects and potentially enhance its effects.

Step 1

Check with your doctor before undergoing a colon cleanse. There are three main types of colon cleanses -- enema, herbal and laxative. Enemas should only be done by a trained medical professional, and laxatives that are used for colon cleansing are powerful and often require a prescription. Although herbal products are often touted as "all-natural," even these should be checked by your doctor, since some herbal compounds can interact with medications that you may be taking, according to the American Council on Science and Health.

Step 2

Drink plenty of water. One of the biggest risks of a colon cleanse is dehydration, according to the Mayo Clinic. Colon cleansing, particularly if done using herbal preparations or laxatives, essentially causes diarrhea to clean out the colon. This can cause you to lose large amounts of fluid, resulting in dehydration.

Step 3

Increase your intake of potassium and sodium. These substances, which are known as electrolytes, are essential for your body to work properly. One of the hazards of colon cleanses is that they can cause you to become deficient in these electrolytes, the MD Anderson Cancer Center says, which can cause serious problems.
