Calories Burnt on a Chi Machine

In the late 1980's, the chi exercise machine was invented in Japan. The user is exercised by the machine while lying down by a series of waves going up and down the user's spine. The waves start at the feet and work up the body. The machine is called a "goldfish" in Japan, due to the figure eight motion.

Calories Burned

Fifteen minutes on a chi machine is the equivalent to brisk walking for 90 minutes, according to Chi Machine 4 U.com. However, the FDA has issued warning letters to Chi Machine International regarding its health claims, including those about weight loss. No scientific studies have shown that the chi machine does indeed assist in weight loss. Seeking the advice of your doctor before embarking on any weight loss program is an excellent idea.

The Machine

The chi machine a passive exercise machine. The user lies down and the machine, which is electronically controlled and motor-driven, creates a wave of motion up and down the user's spine. The motion, called pulsing, can be fixed at one speed on some machines and altered on others. The purpose is to stimulate the body's center of gravity, which is between the navel and the pelvis. This area is considered to be the core of our energy, and it is believed that stimulating this center of gravity has potential health benefits.

Conclusion

A very small study in Australia shows that the chi machine does have some health benefits for reducing lympoedema, but further research is needed. This study also showed some weight loss, but this could be due to the reduction in fluid buildup and not actual fat loss. The FDA has not classified the chi machine as a medical device in the U.S.
