The health consequences of carrying around too much body fat are well known. Reducing your percentage of body fat will help you lose weight, lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. People in the western world typically start to lose muscle and accumulate fat starting at around 20, says Sports Fitness Advisor. Observing certain lifestyle changes can help you lower your body fat and improve your health.

Step 1

Vary your cardio workouts to help stimulate your metabolism and avoid plateaus, states Bodybuilding.com. Choose exercises like running, swimming, cycling or circuit training and mix them up during the week.

Step 2

Perform high intensity interval training. Do 10 to 30 seconds of activities such as sprinting, followed by two minutes of a slower exercise like walking. Try it with swimming or cycling too.

Step 3

Drink up to one gallon of water per day, suggests Bodybuilding.com. Water will help your liver convert fat to produce energy.

Step 4

Lift weights on a regular basis. Weight training will build muscle which will help raise your resting metabolism. A raise in your metabolism will help you burn fat.

Step 5

Reduce the amount of food you eat at a sitting, advises Vanderbilt University. Also avoid fast food and processed foods and eat more fruits, whole grains and vegetables.
