Certain natural supplements may be helpful in treating your night sweats. According to MayoClinic.com, night sweats are bouts of sweating that occur when you are sleeping. Night sweats occur in both women and men. In most cases, night sweats are not indicative of a serious medical problem. Before taking natural supplements to help treat your night sweats, talk with your doctor about possible side effects, proper dosage and potential drug interactions.

Schisandra

Schisandra, also known as Schisandra chinensis, is a natural supplement that may be helpful in treating your night sweats. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, schisandra, a member of the Schisandraceae family, has been used to help treat many health conditions, including asthma, diarrhea, indigestion, influenza, liver disease and sweating. Schisandra is a woody vine that grows in the forests of Northern China and certain parts of Russia. This herb possesses all five basic tastes, has warming tendencies and thrives in partially shady, moist and well-drained soil. The fruit of the schisandra plant is used for medicinal purposes. Ed Smith, an herbalist and author of the book "Therapeutic Herb Manual," states that schisandra is an antioxidant, astringent, adaptogen, expectorant and anti-tussive that is used to help treat night sweats and spontaneous perspiration.

Sage

Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that sage, also called Salvia officinalis, is a carminative, astringent and antibacterial that is used to help treat excessive perspiration, night sweats and other health complaints. Sage is a small evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean region, although it has naturalized to many regions around the world. Sage belongs to the Mint family, has a pungent taste, possesses warming and drying tendencies and is used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Practitioners of botanical medicine use the plants' aerial herb medicinally. According to Dr. William A. Mitchell, Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of the book "Plant Medicine in Practice," sage contains resins, tannins and bitter principles and is an effective natural supplement for night sweats.

Astragalus

The University of Maryland Medical Center touts astragalus as a natural supplement to help treat your night sweats. Astragalus is a flowering perennial plant native to Mongolia, Korea and the northern and eastern regions of China. Astragalus, also called Astragalus membranaceus, belongs to the Legume family, has a sweet and moistening taste, possesses slightly warming tendencies and contains polysaccharides, triterpenoids and isoflavones. The plant's dried root is used for medicinal purposes. According to Tilgner, astragalus is an adaptogen, antiviral and immune system modulator that may be helpful in treating cancer patients recovering from conventional chemotherapy treatment. Astragalus may also be helpful in treating other conditions associated with a compromised immune system, including AIDS. AIDS and chemotherapy are both possible causes of night sweats in men.
