Stevia is a natural sugar alternative, derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It has been used as a sweetener for hundreds of years throughout the world and is gaining popularity in the United States. If you are trying to watch your sugar intake because of diabetes or dieting, stevia is a safe alternative to chemical sweeteners, and has a negligible effect on blood glucose levels. You can purchase powder or liquid forms of stevia extract. Use sparingly, since these extracts can be up to 300 times sweeter than common table sugar.
Tea & Coffee
Add 1 tsp. stevia to coffee or tea in place of sugar, honey or chemical sweeteners.
Smoothies & Popsicles
Use stevia to sweeten your favorite smoothie recipe. Blend 10 strawberries, 1 banana and 1 cup milk or soy milk with 1 tsp. Stevia and ice cubes. Drink or freeze in frozen molds.
Chocolate Milk
If your kids love chocolate milk or hot chocolate, but you don't love feeding them more sugar than is found in soda, use stevia. In your blender add 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp. stevia and 1 cup milk. Even picky eaters won't know the difference. Add ice cubes to the blender for a cold treat, or heat on the stove in a small pan for warm cocoa.
Soda
Stevia manufacturers produce stevia liquid concentrates, in flavors such as peach, mango, strawberry and root beer. Add a few drops to plain sparkling water for a fizzy soda that is chemical free and sugar free.
