Foods That Reduce Colon and Prostate Cancer

The foods you eat can influence your risk of developing cancer of the colon or prostate. Colon cancer affects the lower part of your digestive system. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, change in bowel routine, blood in your stool, and abdominal cramping and discomfort. Prostate cancer affects the prostate and is one of the most common types of cancer to affect men, according to MayoClinic.com. Symptoms include swelling in the legs, blood in the urine, pelvic discomfort, and increased frequency of urination. Maintaining a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet is important to reduce your risk of developing colon and prostate cancer.

Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fats

Including foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids in your daily diet may help reduce your risk of colon cancer and prostate cancer. The University of Maryland Medical Center informs that Inuit, who eat a diet rich in omega-3 fats, have a lower incidence of colorectal cancer than those with a lower dietary intake. The University of Maryland reports that daily consumption of fish oil, rich in omega-3s, may slow the rate of colon cancer progression. This Center also reports that a low-fat diet rich in omega-3 fats can may help prevent the onset of prostate cancer in men. In addition to a supplement or fish oil, omega-3 fats can be found in many foods. Good sources include salmon, halibut, sardines, tuna, flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help reduce your risk of developing colon cancer, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Many fruits and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants that help protect your body from free radical damage and cellular damage. The University of Maryland Medical Center informs that antioxidants can protect you from many types of cancer. Good choices include blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash, bell peppers, and dark leafy greens.

Low-Fat Protein Sources

Choosing lean sources of meat, poultry and dairy products may help reduce your risk for cancer or the colon or prostate. The National Institutes of Health reports that a high fat diet may increase your risk for these types of cancer. Good sources of low-fat protein include lean cuts of beef, turkey, and skinless chicken breast. Other sources include low-fat dairy products such as low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese.
