Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinus cavity that causes the sinuses to swell and trap mucus in the head. A sinus infection may be caused by bacteria, a virus or fungi. Traditional medications, such as decongestants or antibiotics, are used to reduce the inflammation and kill bacteria in the sinus cavity, according to MedinePlus. Goldenseal is a natural herb that is sold in pill form that has naturally occurring anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, according to Drugs.com. Goldenseal can be used to treat the symptoms of a sinus infection, but it should be discussed with your doctor.

Identification

The sinuses are made of sensitive tissue that is lined with mucus membranes. When the sinuses become irritated, they can easily become inflamed and swollen, leading to common sinus infection symptoms. Sinus infections are considered acute or chronic. Acute sinus infections are any sinus inflammation that lasts for fewer than eight weeks, while chronic sinus infections last more than eight weeks, according to MedlinePlus. If you suspect that you have a sinus infection, call your doctor.

Effects

The effects of an infection in your sinuses is a low-grade fever, minor body chills, fatigue, thick, discolored nasal discharge, nasal congestion and sinus pressure pain. The swollen sinus cavities press against other parts of the head, leading to facial tenderness and pain in the eyes, cheeks, teeth, ears or forehead. A sinus infection can lead to complications, such as an ear infection, eye infection or meningitis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Clinic.

Goldenseal Consideration

Goldenseal is a natural herb with anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. When taken as directed, the herb will help kill any harmful bacteria that have formed in the nasal passages, according to Drugs.com. If the sinus infection is the result of a virus or fungi, goldenseal will not help in this capacity. No matter the cause of the sinusitis, goldenseal will help reduce the inflammation in the sinuses and restore normal breathing and drainage through the nose.

Warnings

Do not use goldenseal if you suffer from high blood pressure. Talk with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, have known allergies to foods or medications or have a history of heart disease, glaucoma or diabetes, according to Drugs.com. Goldenseal may cause an allergic reaction. If you develop allergy-related symptoms, such as your throat swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness and hives, call 911 for emergency medical attention.

Other Treatments

Your doctor may prescribe other medical treatments to use in conjunction with goldenseal for a sinus infection. She may recommend a decongestant, antihistamine, antibiotic or pain relievers to alleviate common sinusitis symptoms.
