Two of the most popular ways of removing toxins from the body as of 2010 are the colonic cleanse and the body cleanse. However, several factors must be taken into consideration when determining which cleanse is right for you. According to BowelCleanse.org, the colonic cleanse focuses solely on the colon. Because of this, it tends to work in less time. The colonic cleanse may also help eliminate unwanted pounds faster than does a full body cleanse. A complete body cleanse is intended to purify all of the organs including the colon. This type of detoxification tends to take more time due to the larger amount of organs being cleansed. The complete body cleanse also tends to cost less than a colonic cleanse. Consult a physician on which type of cleanse is right for you.

History

Cleansing has been a part of human history for thousands of years. Saunas and sweat lounges have been used as a form of cleansing since the early part of 1000 A.D. Archaeologists have discovered the first known written herbal prescriptions in China that dates back to 2700 B.C. Fasting has been used since the beginning of recorded history as a way of detoxifying the body.

Function of a Colon Cleanse

Colon cleansing, otherwise known as colonic irrigation, helps remove unwanted toxins from the colon. These toxins build up over time due to improper eating and lack of exercise. Although there is little scientific evidence to support the claims, many believe these toxins contribute to a variety of health problems including allergies and asthma. According to digestive care expert Brenda Watson, by ridding your colon of these toxins, your body is better equipped to heal itself by increasing energy levels and improving your immune system.

Types of Colon Cleanses

Colon cleansers can be broken down into three main groups. The first is colonic hydrotherapy. This involves the use of water forced into the rectum either by tube or or catheter. This procedure is normally performed by a professional. The second type of cleanse are enemas or laxatives. These types of cleanses are generally done with over-the-counter products found at most drug stores that can either be taken orally or through the rectum. The third type of colon cleansers are called commercial cleansers which can be purchased at retailers or on-line. These are generally taken orally.

Function of a Body Cleanse

Like the colon cleanse, a body cleanse is used to purify and remove harmful toxins from organs. However, unlike the colon cleanse, a body cleanse focuses on detoxifying the entire body and not just one specific organ. Although there is little scientific evidence to support the benefits of a full body cleanse, many people believe by removing harmful toxins from your system allows for overall better health.

Types of Body Cleanses

There are two main types of body cleansing. The first is the fast. A fast can either be a water only fast or a fruit and vegetable juice fast. These types of detoxification programs usually only last for a few days. They generally begin with an ease-in phase that consists of a fruit and vegetable only diet to help the body prepare for the fast. The second type of body cleanse allows food to be eaten, but limits the variety of foods to be consumed over a several week period. Often these programs require you to avoid foods such as sugar, alcohol, caffeine, flour meat and dairy.
