Taking care of your skin every day is one of the best things you can do for it. Washing, hydrating and protecting your complexion from environmental aggressors keeps it looking and feeling its best, as well as helps prevent premature signs of aging, says MayoClinic.com. Everyone's skin type is different, and you can customize your regimen to suit your needs. A dermatologist can also aid you in developing a skincare routine.

Cleansing

Wash your face both in the morning and at night to get rid of dead skin cells, dirt and impurities. A mild cleanser is best if your skin is dry or sensitive, but people with oily or acne-prone skin can use one medicated with salicylic acid to help keep pores clear and prevent pimples, says the American Academy of Dermatology. Ideally, your skin will feel clean and refreshed after washing and not tight or dried-out. Do not use cleansers that contain soaps, as these can strip your skin of its natural oils, and those with sensitive skin should avoid face washes with fragrances, which can be irritating.

Moisturizing

Apply a moisturizer after you wash your face to replenish any lost hydration. Dermatologist Sonia Badreshia-Bansal says moisturized skin is better able to protect itself from damage. If your skin is oily, use an oil-free moisturizer to avoid clogging your pores. Those with dry or sensitive skin can use moisturizers with a calming ingredient like chamomile to help lessen any irritation, and may apply the product up to three times a day, if needed.

Sun Protection

Protecting your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays and free radicals helps ward off wrinkles, age spots and an uneven-looking complexion, reports MayoClinic.com. Put on broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning, and reapply more every two hours if you are spending time in the sun. Choose an oil-free sunblock if your skin is acne prone, or one that contains added moisturizers if your skin is dry.

Targeted Treatment

Acne and wrinkles require stronger or medicated products to treat them. A retinol lotion or gel can both clear acne and lessen the look of fine lines, says Badreshia-Bansal. Adding one of these treatments into your skincare regimen can improve the look and feel of your complexion. However, applying your treatment product to unwashed skin can inhibit its efficacy, as can putting it on after you moisturize. For maximum effectiveness, wash your face at night, apply the treatment, allow it to soak in and then apply your moisturizer.

Considerations

You may have to try several skincare products before you find the ones that are right for you. Some products may irritate your skin, while others may not be effective enough. Ask a dermatologist about products before you begin using them, and discuss any skincare concerns you have with her.
